This classic self-guided tour gives you the best of the Nordic capitals and the dramatic fjords and mountains of Norway. You'll travel by rail and local ferries, taking in the incredible scenery, fairytale cities, stunning fjords and the “Scandi-Cool” lifestyle.

The tour highlights include an overnight cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo, 'Norway in a Nutshell' railway trip, Norway’s Sognefjord, and the beautiful Oslo to Stockholm train ride. At each destination, unique experiences with your local guide will await you.

Day 1

You'll arrive in Copenhagen and meet your driver for a private transfer to your centrally located hotel. Right on the dock in Nyhavn, you can simply step outside for a beer and some snacks with the locals in this charming harbour. You will have a 24-hour Copenhagen Card on hand allowing you to free travel on buses and trains within the cities metropolis, as well as free entrance to over 70 museums and attractions. In Copenhagen, there are many world-class restaurants to enjoy in the evening.

Today, with your guide, you will be taken into the heart of the Danish capital, full of historical buildings and ancient streets. You will see the Royal residence Amalienborg Palace, the Christiansborg Castle, the home of the Danish Parliament, the Royal Opera House, and many more sights. Later in the afternoon, you'll transfer to the pier where you will embark on the overnight cruise to Oslo. Enjoy breathtaking views of the city from the sea as you leave Denmark behind and sail towards Norway.

Day 3

Arrive in Oslo and Scenic Train to Mountainside Village of Geilo

Arrive in Oslo and Scenic Train to Mountainside Village of Geilo

After breakfast, you'll arrive in Oslo and take a private transfer to the train station. You'll have an hour or so to stock up on supplies before your midday train to the mountainside village, Geilo. On arrival, you'll walk to your hotel and then stretch your legs with a mountain walk, enjoy spa treatments or sit on the balcony with a refreshment. If you like to get active and see some views, you can take the summer chair lift up to Hardangervidda. In the evening, a buffet dinner will be served.

Scenic Train Journey on the Flam Railway

After breakfast, you'll make your way back to the station to catch the train that will take you on one of the most picturesque train rides in the world – the Flåm Railway. You'll disembark at Myrdal and board the scenic railway for a 20-kilometre-long journey down to Flåm Valley. On arrival in Flåm, you'll walk to your hotel. There is plenty to do this afternoon; take a walk up the back of Flåm to visit waterfalls, join an optional excursion, go kayaking or visit the brewery on the fjord's edge.

This morning, you'll continue exploring this tiny fjord village until your ferry ride to Balestrand. Known for wonderful light and breathtaking nature, Balestrand is a haven of peace, artists from all over the world have travelled here for inspiration, and traces of both English and German architecture can be seen in the many villas. The historic Kviknes Hotel, your home for the evening, is beautifully located by the Sognefjord and boasts a large collection of paintings by artists who have visited the area and stayed at the hotel.

Today, you'll ake the express boat out of the Sognefjord and south towards Bergen. With six hours on the water, you have plenty of time to soak in the atmosphere and the fresh air. Precipitous mountains, thunderous waterfalls and small homesteads that cling to the mountain sides are the framework of this boat tour. Bergen is known as the "The Gateway to the Fjords of Norway" and it is a lively town with small-town charm and international feel.

Today, you'll sit back for a seven-hour train ride, returning to Oslo on the Bergen to Oslo line, considered one of the world's most scenic train rides. There is also the option to fly or overnight sleeper train. You'll arrive in the late afternoon and walk across to your hotel. You'll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore Oslo on your own or get some food and retire for the evening.

The Norwegian capital has a great deal to offer the discerning traveller, and you have a full day to discover the city with the help of an Oslo Pass and your private half-day guided tour. Your local guide can recommend visiting some of the Oslo highlights, including the Viking Ship, Kontiki and Fram museums, the Vigeland Sculpture Park, Ekerbergeparken and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum. A walk around the centre of town to view the Parliament, the Castle, the Harbour area and the new Opera House is well worth it.

Be sure to visit the ABBA museum with great interactive exhibits!

With your own guide and car, you'll visit the Vasa Museum and the city districts of Södermalm, Gamla Stan, Norrmalm, Östermalm and Djurgården, each with its own special character. You'll end the tour in Djurgården, known as the outdoor recreation centre for the city locals as well as home to many of the city’s museums, the Vasa Museum, the Open Air Museum of Skansen and the latest addition, ABBA the Museum.
