Overview

Among the large numbers of trekking routes in Nepal, Annapurna circuit trek is one of the most famous treks in the world. It includes trekking around the entire Annapurna massif, the world's biggest pass Thorong La and the world's deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki Gorge.

The highlights of this trek are Manang Valley, Thorong La, Muktinath, Marpha village, Kali Gandaki gorge, hot springs and the panoramic views of the Himalayas from Poon Hill.

On this 18-day Annapurna Circuit itinerary, you will be able to notice the changes in flora and fauna in the areas you will trek and you will also experience numerous different climate zones. You will trek from the driest area in Mustang to the rainest city in Nepal, Pokhara.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

You will arrive at Kathmandu airport where you will be transferred by private car to Kathmandu city Hotel for check-in. Attend a pre-trip meeting at Kathmandu city Hotel in the afternoon and then you are free to explore the city for the rest of the day. There is a variety of interesting markets and museums to visit in Thamel.

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel after breakfast for a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu. Visit Swyambhunath Stupa, also known as Monkey temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath Stupa. After lunch, you will return to Hotel Moonlight to prepare anything you may need during the upcoming trek.

Day 3

Drive to Bhulbhule via Besishahar

After check out at your hotel, you will be transferred to a bus station where you will catch an eight-hour bus to Bhulbhule. Stop at Aanbu Khaireni for lunch and continue after, where you can enjoy the stunning view of snow-capped mountains from Besishahar on the way to Bhulbhule. Once you arrive, check into a local tea house and rest awhile before dinner.

Day 4

Bhulbhule to Jagat

Today is the first day of your trek! After breakfast, you will head towards your destination for today. Your trek starts with a walk on the fairly flat path to Ngadi village. Then the trek will ascend to Bahundanda where you will stop for lunch. After lunch, you will walk down to Syange and the trail will then go uphill to approach Jagat. Experience the diverse culture and nature along the way.

Day 5

Jagat to Dharapani

After breakfast, start your trek to Dharapani. Your day begins with a rocky trail following the Marsyangdi River and you will hike a steadily uphill trail to Tall (1675 metres), the first village in the Manang district, where you will stop for lunch. Afterwards, you will cross a wide and flat valley, and continue to walk on varied terrain to approach Dharapani at 1890 metres.

Day 6

Dharapani to Chame

After breakfast, you will trek 6 hours to Chame; the district headquarter of Manang District. Your day starts with an ascent to Tyanja (2360 metres), then continue through some forest near the river. Stop at Timang for lunch and continue until you reach Chame. You will enjoy the excellent views of Annapurna II and two hot springs by the town as you meet the local community, who migrated from Tibet a long time ago.

Day 7

Chame to Pisang

Your day starts with a steep and narrow path through a dense forest, which will bring you to a dramatically curved rockface. You will cross a river on a long bridge at 2910 metres, then you will cross another bridge at 3040 metres. From here, the view of the soaring Paungda Danda rockface really begins to appear. Stop at Humde for lunch and continue to approach Pisang. Check into your tea house and explore around Upper Pisang in your free time before dinner.

Day 8

Pisang to Manang

Today you will head towards your next destination, Manang. You will continue to trek through the drier upper part of the Manang district, cut off from the full effect of the monsoon by the Annapurna Range. After stopping for lunch, the trail continues past the picturesque but partially hidden village of Braga then continue to approach Manang. Check into a local tea house and explore around Manang in your free time.

Day 9

Acclimatisation Day at Manang

Today is your acclimatisation day, starting with a slow and easy morning to Chongkor View Point (3850 metres), enjoy the excellent view of Gangapurna Lake and Gangapurna Glacier from there and return to Manang. You will have lunch and after you are free to explore Braga Village where you can visit the Himalayan Rescue Association which will give you some idea about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Day 10

Manang to Yak Kharka

Today you will leave Manang after breakfast. The trail makes an ascent of nearly 500 metres to Yak Kharka. You will steadily climb through Tenki Manang, leaving the Marsyangdi Valley. Continuing along the Jarsang Khola Valley, you will reach Yak Kharka at 4000 metres. Here you will see that the vegetation will gradually become more sparse. You will arrive at Yak Kharka for lunch. In the afternoon you will be free to explore Yak Kharka at your leisure.

Day 11

Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi

Today your destination is Thorong Phedi. Your day starts with a two-hour ascent. After, the trail descends to cross the river at 4310 metres, and you will climb up to Thorong Phedi at 4450 metres where your overnight stay will be. Then you will go for an acclimatisation hike to Thorong high camp to prepare yourself for 5416 metres the next morning. Return to Phedi, have your dinner and go to bed early.

Muktinath via Thorong La Pass

Today is the main goal of your trek, so your day starts in the early morning. After a quick breakfast at 4 am, you will start your trek with a steep ascent to high camp, where you will have excellent views of Gangapurna and Annapurna III. Then continue to ascend to reach the world's biggest pass, Thorong La (5416 metres). After Thorong La your trek will descend to Phedi, where you will continue to Muktinath. Here, visit Muktinath temple, monasteries and Jwala Mai.

You will trek to Marpha (2667 metres), the kingdom of Nepali apples. You will trek to Jomsom through Kagbeni where you will have lunch and continue to Marpha. Explore around Marpha village and an apple farm, which was established in 1966. You may buy some apple products for your family such as apple pie, apple crumble, apple cider and apple brandy.

Drive 7 hours from Marpha to Tatopani passing by some Thakali villages called Kalopani and Lete. You will have an impressive view of Dhaulagiri and you can also enjoy the splendid views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Barahshikhar and many more mountains and peaks. Today you will pass through the deepest gorge in the world made by the Kali Gandaki River in between two giant mountains. You will also enjoy the natural hot springs at Tatopani (1189 metres).

You will ascend again to Ghorepani (2850 metres) passing through many villages including the main village of Poon Magars called Shikha. The name Poon Hill is given from the ethnic group that inhabitant in this area, as their surname is Poon. Stop at Shikha for lunch and continue to ascend to approach Ghorepani. Check into a tea house and explore around the village where you can enjoy the sunset view in the evening.

Day 16

Poon Hill Sunrise and Nayapul to Pokhara

Today you will hike to Poonhill (3210 metres) for sunrise, where you can enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri and Machhapuchchhre. After, you will return to Ghorepani to have breakfast. You will follow the same route you took on the ascent to trek back down to Tikhedhunga where you will stop for lunch. Then, you will be driven 1.5 hours to Pokhara. Once you arrive, you can explore around the lakeside in your free time.

On this day of your Annapurna Circuit itinerary, you will check out of your hotel and will be transferred to the tourist bus station where you will catch a bus to Kathmandu. Enjoy a 7-hour scenic drive and stop at Malekhu or nearby for lunch. Continue after lunch to approach Kathmandu. Once you arrive, you will have some free time to explore around Thamel in your free time until the evening where you will enjoy a traditional farewell dinner with a Nepali family.
