Interest in visiting South Africa for an active vacation, this trip will get your adrenaline pumping before you even board your flight!. Over 14 days you'll squeeze in unmissable highlights as you travel to Cape Town and the Wine Country, Drakensberg Amphitheatre hike and Kruger National Park safari with a short stopover for beach and ocean swimming just outside of Durban.

Taking your own car, you'll have a leisurely drive between locations offering you the chance to see the diverse landscapes of South Africa before you walk them! In between your walking trails optional activities include a mix of leisurely suggestions and challenging ones, including the Big Swing, one of the highest bungee jumps in the world!

Day 1

Travel to Cape Town

On arrival at the airport of South Africa's Mother City, meet & greet and transfer to hotel. There are many optional sights to visit: take the Table Mountain Cable Way for spectacular city panorama views. As the cable car only operates in good weather conditions squeeze this visit in as soon as possible. A 2-hour round trip hike to the top of Lion's Head towards evening also offers wonderful views.

Cape of Good Hope

The tour starts at 7.30 am at Ashanti Lodge Green Point. The excursion takes you along the Atlantic coast to Hout Bay harbour, guarded by the Twelve Apostles mountains. You have the option of a cruise to Seal Island. The journey continues along the breathtaking Chapman's Peak Drive. Another optional activity visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town. At the Cape of Good Hope enjoy a picnic followed by a leisurely walk from Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope.

Visit the Stellenbosch Winelands. Self-drive to the Asara Restaurant for 9.45 to start your tour. Over 21km, you'll have an action-packed bike tour with wine tastings at three excellent small boutique wineries. The cycle route takes you along private farm roads and vineyards. In a colonial cityscape mixed with interesting buildings, you'll walk past the East India Company and Cape Dutch houses from different eras. Alternatively, drive wine routes to Stellebosch, Paarl and Franschhoek vineyards.

Day 4

Fly to Durban and KwaZulu Natal

After breakfast drive to the airport. Return your car rental and fly to Durban, King Shaka International Airport. Pick up another rental car and drive to Salt Rock. You'll have time for the beach and swimming in the Indian Ocean. The north of KwaZulu Natal is known for its large population of bottlenose dolphins and for surfing. The Dolphin Coast offers a rich cultural heritage, excellent fishing and spectacular golden beaches lined by sugar cane fields punctuated by pretty coastal villages.

After breakfast drive to the Drakensberg to the Cavern Mountain Resort with a late afternoon arrival. Here, you will meet your guide to prepare for your three-day hike. The Amphitheatre is the most recognisable and dramatically imposing feature of the entire Drakensberg, a World Heritage Site of outstanding environmental and cultural importance. The hike is at a comfortable pace without the burden of a heavy backpack. At the end of the day, you can relax and unwind at the lodge.

Day 6

Today's hike begins with a steep climb across sandstone cliffs. There is a 25-minute detour to some San Rock Art paintings at Lone Rock (a worthwhile detour!). The trail then continues to Sugar Loaf Gap where there are spectacular views of Northern Drakensberg. From here, the route meanders along the ridge, bypassing Cold Hill and Cold Ridge with sweeping views of the former home of QwaQwa and Metsi Matsho Dam. Another 2 hours hike through Basotho Gate, you will reach the Witsies Mountain Lodge.

This is an eventful day, you must start early to make the most of it! Transfer to the shadow of Sentinel Peak and complete the mountaineers check-list before hiking to the Witches and Zigzags, and the Sentinel massif. Follow a path below the 'Western buttresses' offering magnificent views then negotiate two cliff faces and climb up to the plateau, where you spend the day exploring. Here you find Africa's highest waterfall, Tugela Falls, the Mont Aux Sources summit, and the Rainbow Falls.

Today is an easy walk to the Mahai River Valley and the Royal Natal National Park. On the way, you will pass small waterfalls and pools, and go for a refreshing swim. The vegetation changes dramatically as you descend; you will hike along the southern slopes through forests. We can visit the Bushmen paintings, which are 2 km further. Then transfer from the Royal Natal National Park back to the Cavern. When you're back in The Cavern, you can get a massage to relieve your tired limbs.

Check out after breakfast and depart in a north-easterly direction towards the Kruger National Park, with an overnight on a guest farm near Ermelo half-way. The farm in Ermelo is remote with several animals that you can walk around to visit. The family that owns the guest farm have been welcoming guests on this route for years and will happily tell you about life here.

After breakfast depart on the 4-hour drive to the Kruger National Park. You will be picked up from reception for your walking safari on the Wolhuter Trail. This trail has a spectacular landscape characterised by high granite cliffs and deep valleys; it's also classified as a botanical reserve. The Wolhuter Trail was an active area in ancient times with many relics. You might see white or black rhinos; wild cats, elephants, buffaloes, and reedbuck. You'll also see zebra, giraffes, and warthogs.

Another day of game walks in the Kruger wilderness. The morning begins before dawn with a cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit, then the walk starts from camp. We come back in the late morning and after a well-deserved brunch, a siesta until mid-afternoon. The afternoon activity is a short walk and traditional sundowner. We return to the camp where a well-prepared meal is served. Sit by the fire, socialise, hear the sounds of wildlife at night and admire the breathtaking night sky in the park.

The Panorama Route

The Panorama Route

Early morning, you might enjoy the morning bush choir from the camp as there is no walk. After breakfast, drive from Pretoriuskop Camp to Skukuza to the Kruger Gate then travel on to Graskop. Here's a stop for the last thrill: the Big Swing. The adrenaline rushes at 180 km speed during the 68-metre freefall; one of the world's highest Cable Gorge Swings. Alternatively, go on a 'Zipline'. You'll fly over the Graskop Gorge on a 135-metre high "Foefie Slide" wire rope. You'll stay in Blyde's Canyon

After breakfast drive along part of the Panorama Route, then via the quaint and fun-filled town of Dullstroom where you may want to stop for lunch and one final walk. You will drive to the outskirts of Johannesburg to reach your lodge when you will stay for the night. Relax in the solitude of the lodge which is just moments from the city and the airport yet still feels so remote.
