18-Day Langtang Gosaikunda Trek

Overview

This 18-day Nepal trekking package takes you along the scenic landscapes of the Langtang Valley to the serene turquoise waters of the Gosaikunda Lake.

The trek commences after a 150-kilometre drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The trail gradually ascends upstream along the Bhote Koshi river passing through the funky flower clusters and forests of the Langtang valley to the alpine meadows and yak pastures around Kyangjin.

After a challenging ascent to the Kyangjin Ri (4773 metres), you can behold the 360-degree spectacular mountain views. You'll continue trailing towards Thulo Syabru and to the sacred Gosainkunda Lake, perched at an elevation of 4380 metres. The trip winds up with a drive back to Kathmandu from the last point of Chisapani Sundarijal.

The Langtang region boasts a varied topography from subtropical to alpine forests. There are a number of rhododendrons, oak, pine, maples and other trees along with animals like Himalayan black bear, Rhesus monkey, red pandas, Himalayan Tahr and more.

Today, you'll head towards the Lama Hotel, crossing a suspension bridge over the Langtang River. The Langtang river is going to be our constant companion throughout the day. It is a fairly challenging walk along the well-defined trails, as you pass through the impressive clusters of oaks, rhododendrons and bamboos. You'll halt for lunch at Rimche at 2,455 metres and then continue your walk along the treacherous uphill trail all the way up to Lama Hotel.

Today, the trail gradually ascends along forests of oaks, maples, hemlocks and the funky rhododendrons, giving you fleeting glimpses of Langtang Lirung (7,246 metres), as you arrive at Ghora Tabela, where you'll halt for lunch. When your trek resumes, you'll pass through a Nepal Army Check Post. You'll proceed further along a grassy trail enjoying the seemingly never-ending ambience of greenery.

Kyangjin Gompa, the last human settlement in the Langtang region of Nepal offering some enticing excursions to Tsergo Ri and Yala Cheese Factory. This is perhaps the easiest, shortest and the most scenic walk of the trip. You can afford to spoil yourself sleeping till late morning as your next destination, Kyangjin Gompa, is only a three-hour walk from Langtang Village.

Kyangjin Gompa is the hub that offers some enthralling excursions to the famed destinations like Yala Cheese Factory, Tsergo Ri, Kyangjin Ri and more. So, an extra day here is not just to get acclimatised to the soaring altitude. Tsergo Ri is one of the most frequently ascended ridges in the Langtang region of Nepal. It takes about seven hours to make it to the top of the ridge and get back to your teahouse in Kyangjin Gompa.

Today, you'll retrace your steps back to Lama Hotel, a 1400-metre descent with a few short exceptions.
You'll follow the same route till you reach the Landslide Lodge where you now take the upper trail to reach Thulo Syabru. The trail goes up for 400 metres and passes a Bhatti at U Kyang on the ridge before reaching the pleasant village of Thulo Syabru, decorated with elaborately carved windows.

The trail today takes you down through the pine and juniper forests until you arrive at Bamboo, a tiny settlement poised aside the roaring Langtang River. As you commence the trek after lunch and advance further, you'll come across a trail junction. The first trail descends to Syabrubesi while the second trail winds up towards Thulo Syabru where you'll overnight.

You'll start the trek this morning bypassing the Gompa, school and army post and switch back to the steep hill above the village to Dursagang (2,660 metres). The trail becomes less steep now and passes through the forests of hemlock and oaks to the top of a ridge at Foprang Danda where you will have lunch.

Today, the trail climbs steeply up the ridge which creates a transition zone between rich, moist forests on the northern slopes to dry, scrub vegetation on the slope facing south. The area on the northern slope is a sanctuary for the red panda, an endangered species that Nepali people call 'Cat Bear'.

This morning, you'll start climbing further along the ridge till you see the first lakes around 4,200 metres. The trail now leaves the ridge and heads high above the Trisuli Valley. After the trail crosses a spur, the second lake in the chain (Bhairav Kund), Gosaikunda comes into view. Upon arrival, you'll settle in and get ready for dinner at your teahouse.

The first part of the trail climbs further through rugged country, passing three small lakes towards the Lauberina La Pass (4610 metres). The trail descends alongside a stream through the alpine country to the national park post at Bhera Goth. You continue over a rocky trail along the middle of the valley to Phedi (3740 metres) for lunch. From Phedi, the route drops to a stream and then climbs through scrub bamboo to a crest. From here, you climb in and out of ravines across the valley to Gopte.

Today, the trail continues up to Tharepati on the ridge at 3490 metres from where you can see the Helambu region. You will enter the forest again and follow the ridges before descending to Magen Goth. Now, the trail gently climbs to a small pass at Mere Danda at 3510 metres before descending through rhododendron Gul Bhanjyang. The total trekking time is around six hours.

Today, you'll start by descending down a forested ridge to the long, strung out village of Thodang Betini (2260 metres). From here, you climb up around 200 metres to the top of the Jhogin Danda ridge and descend over a stone staircase to the teashops at Chipling. Continuing your way down past Brahmin and Chhetri villages and through meadows and fields, you finally reach Chisopani. The total trek will take around five hours.

You start the day by climbing up the last pass of the trek at Borlang Bhanjyang which lies at 2240 metres. From here, you descend steeply through eroded chasms towards Tamang settlements of Mulkharka at 1800 metres. From here on, it is a short walk to Sundarijal. Your driver will then pick you from Sundarijal to transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu, a four-hour drive away.
