Moving on, you'll drive to El Chaltén, declared the National Hiking Capital, a paradise for hikers and climbers who can enjoy numerous world-class trails. You'll spend the latter half of your Patagonia trip here appreciating the stunning views with the majestic summit of Mt. Fitz Roy, glaciers, Lake Viedma, and hidden lagoons on a series of self-drive tours and adventures!

Day 1

Upon arrival at El Calafate airport, you'll collect your rental vehicle and head to your hotel in the town to begin your Patagonia trip. El Calafate is a pleasant village located on the southern shore of Lake Argentino, about 80 kilometres from Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site. Its strategic location between El Chaltén and Torres del Paine in Chile makes it a great stop for Patagonian explorers and travellers.

Today, you'll have the day free to explore the area. If you choose to visit Perito Moreno Glacier, you'll leave El Calafate and drive to Los Glaciares National Park to visit one of Argentina’s natural highlights: the Perito Moreno Glacier. The glacier is 30 kilometres long, five kilometres wide, and 60 metres high and it is one of the few glaciers in the world that still constantly advances. When here, you can do a cruise or kayaking experience to get even close to the glacier.

Today, you'll have the day free to explore as you wish in your rental car. Should you wish, you can embark on the Estancia Cristina Discovery Tour. You'll embark on a cruise among icebergs and breathtaking sceneries overlooking the western front of the Upsala Glacier, one of the largest in the Los Glaciares National Park. You'll navigate through the Cristina Channel to finally disembark at Estancia Cristina, a unique ranch combining nature, adventure and history where numerous activities await.

Today, you leave El Calafate and drive to El Chalten in your rental car. On arrival, you'll have the option to head out on a trekking tour to discover the amazing history of a pioneer at Río de las Vueltas Valley, now named El Chaltén. You'll visit the house of the very first pioneer Andreas Madsen, a Danish man that arrived at El Chalten back in 1901 in order to work with Perito Pascasio Moreno. Madsen built the very first house in El Chaltén, the one that you will be visiting today.

Today is once again a day free to explore as your wish with your rental car. A self-guided hike is one of the best ways to explore the area and El Chalten is the ideal destination for trekkers as there are many self-guided options. Most of the circuits begin within easy walking distance of the hotel. If you prefer guided trekking tours, you can embark on a tour to Laguna Torre or Laguna de los Tres, both stunning and rewarding hikes from El Chalten.

Today, you'll have another day free which presents the perfect opportunity to self-drive to Lago del Desierto through Río De las Vueltas. While driving, you will pass through spectacular landscapes, framed by the Cordón de Los Cóndores. You can also see the Marconi Glacier, the gateway to the Southern Continental Ice Field. At Lago del Desierto, you can take a cruise, a trek or simply enjoy the views with a picnic. Alternatively, you can enjoy a unique rafting adventure in El Chalten.
