8-Day Tibet Overland Adventure

Overview

Tibet is a historical region covering much of the Tibetan Plateau in Central Asia that offers exciting adventure and intriguing cultural exploration filled with dramatic landscapes and fascinating architecture.

This eight-day Tibet trip sees you visiting beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor as well as the stunning bright blue waters of Yamdrok Lake among other hidden treasures.

You can visit the Dalai Lama's summer palace and stroll in the old alleys of Barkhor where you can enjoy the sweet tea and chat with locals or bargain with the street vendors and take time to understand the local life in Lhasa and the surrounding areas.

Tibet is a region of natural beauty and wonder, as you get closer to the Nepalese border, you'll have many an opportunity to see Mount Everest and the evolving landscapes as you descend from the plateau.

Day 1

Fly from Kathmandu to Gonggar Airport

Today, your Tibet trip commences! You'll start with a fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa enjoying a breathtaking view of Himalayan ranges including Mount Everest as you pass over them. Upon your arrival at Gonggar airport after immigration formality, you will be met by your guide and transferred directly to your hotel in Lhasa. The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to relax and acclimatise to the altitude.

Day 2

Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Market

Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Market

Today you'll visit the Potala Palace, the winter home of the Dalai Lama. Although the palace cannot be freely explored, you will see some of its chapels including audience hall and the golden burial Chorten of Past Dalai Lamas. After lunch, you'll visit Jokhang Temple, an important sacred site in Tibet. Then, you'll move onto Barkhor and watch the pilgrims prostrating themselves. Take part in clockwise circuit walking around the temple and explore old Lhasa city in your private vehicle.

Day 3

Drepung Monastery & Sera Monastery

Today, with your driver, you'll head eight kilometres northwest of Lhasa to visit the Drepung Monastery which is one of the great three Geluk Monasteries of Tibet. In the afternoon, you'll continue five kilometres from Lhasa to Sera Monastery founded in 1419, which is another one of the great three Geluk monasteries of Tibet. The monastery is well known for the monk's debate at around 3 to 5pm in the afternoon.

Day 4

Drive to Gyantse via Yamdrok Lake

This morning, you'll drive straight to Gyantse, you will drive over three spectacular high passes including the Khamba La at 5100 metres, Karo La at 5050 metres and Simi La at 5000 metres, and passed the beautiful Yamdrok Lake or Turquoise Lake. The lake is surrounded by many snow-capped mountains and in the distance, you have a spectacular view of the Holy Nyenchen Khangsar Mountain. Once you arrive at Gyantse town, you can enjoy the far view of Gyantse Fortress.

Khumbum Stupa & Pelkhor Chorten

In the morning, you'll visit Khumbum Stupa, the giant octagonal Stupa. It is one of the outstanding architectural achievements built by a Gyantse Prince. Next to it is the Palcho Chode Monastery adjacent to the fort, containing 15 different chapels and halls that belong to different orders of Tibetan Buddhism. After visiting Gyantse Khumbum, you'll drive straight to Shigatse, the second largest town in Tibet.

Day 6

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery & Shigatse Local Market

In the morning, you'll visit the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. With its great historical and cultural importance, it is one of the biggest functioning monasteries of Gelugpa. After a quick stop at the local markets for some shopping, you'll continue your journey to Shegar. The drive takes about 4-5 hours to reach the Shegar (also known as New Tingri) crossing highest Gyatso La Pass at 5248 metres above the sea level. On descending, if weather favours, you can see Mount Everest and Mount Cho.

Drive from Shegar to Gyirong

Today, you'll continue with your driver for 323 kilometres which may take about 8 to 9 hours to reach Gyirong Town. On the way to Gyirong, you may catch a glimpse of the majestic Mount Everest and other peaks such as Shisapangma and also Piku Tso Lake. Today, the difference in landscape is quite special, the barren rugged landscape of Tibet to the mighty Himalayas, where the scenery changes to rich forests, typical of the Nepalese foothills.

Today your trip comes to an end! After breakfast, your driver will drive you downhill to reach Chinese immigration. After the immigration process, you will continue to drive to Kathmandu, you will notice as you enter into a completely different landscape. This is your last day and upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will say goodbye to your guide and driver.
