Take the scenic road through New Zealand's South Island on this self-drive journey from Christchurch to Queenstown!

Beginning in Christchurch, this self-drive itinerary takes you on a journey through the South Island. Your first stop on the way to Greymouth brings you to Hanmer Springs with its 22 outdoor thermal pools. Suitably relaxed, your next drive will deliver you to the West Coast via the seaside town of Hokitika to the Franz Josef Glacier.

The next day, you'll marvel at Franz Josef's twin, Fox Glacier from Lake Matheson, before moving on to Wanaka for an afternoon on the lake with wine and cheese. Next, the adventure playground of New Zealand will call and you'll head to Queenstown for two nights. After an exciting jet boating experience, you'll continue your journey to Dunedin, the historic city where you'll spend your final night!

Today, you'll begin your journey with a stop at Franz Josef's twin glacier, the Fox Glacier. A sprawling puzzle of ice, Foz Glacier is tucked into the foothills of the Southern Alps. Both a town and a glacier, the Fox Glacier descends down from the alps into temperate rainforest. For the best view of the glacier, head to Lake Matheson, one of the most photographed lakes in New Zealand, which reflects Mount Cook on a clear day. In the afternoon, you'll arrive at the beautiful Lake Wanaka.
