12-Day Trip Across the Island of Sri Lanka

Overview

Experience 12 exciting days filled with fun and adventure on the beautiful paradisiacal island of Sri Lanka.

You will travel to the historical and culturally rich city of Sigiriya and visit Polonnaruwa, filled with ancient buildings, stupas, and temples built during Sri Lanka's golden age. You'll also visit Pidurangala's ancient monastery to get a bird's eye view of Sigiriya Rock. Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock to experience panoramic views at the summit. You will learn about Sri Lanka's artistic, engineering, and water management systems throughout your first days.

Next, you will take a jeep safari and see the majestic gathering of elephants and many other mammals, including leopards, reptiles and birds, in the Kaudulla National Park. Visit the Dambulla cave temple, which has stunning Buddha statues and paintings, some of Sri Lanka's most important and evocative religious art.

On your way to the famous city of Kandy, drop by a Spice Garden to learn about traditional Ayurveda practices and indigenous herbs and plants of Sri Lanka. Visit the mystical Temple of the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha and witness local devotees pay their respects.

Later on, you will take one of the world's most scenic train trips to Ella through valleys, lush meadows and many other breathtaking sceneries. Nestled high in the misty mountains, you will experience the cold, relaxing weather surrounded by tea plantations and breathtaking waterfalls. Visit local attractions such as the nine arched bridge and Ziplining to experience an exhilarating adventure activity to get your hearts pumping.

Go on a wild Jeep Safari in the Yala national park and the Udawalawe National Park to see the many different species of flora and fauna as well as the elusive leopard and the magnificent elephant, among other beautiful animals.

Travel to Mirissa, home to the sun-kissed and crescent-shaped golden sand beach, to relax. Spend time at the famous Mirissa beach to take in a breathtaking sunset while relaxing on a hammock and sipping a King Coconut. Go on a Whale and Dolphin watching excursion to witness firsthand how the gentle giants swim through the Indian Ocean in the most carefree way.

On your way back to Colombo, you will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle Fort. As well as exploring the time capsule that is Galle Fort, you can enjoy the small coffee shops, restaurants and gelato stand within the rampart walls of the city.

Finally, you will travel to Colombo and experience the hustle and bustle of the capital city and the central business hub of Sri Lanka. Colombo is known for its Night Life with many famous food and beverage outlets which will satisfy your taste buds and keep you entertained.

As all good things come to an end, you'll be driven to the airport to leave for home after spending a wonderful 12 days on this paradise island, collecting many memories and enjoying unique experiences that will enrich you for a lifetime.

After breakfast, your private driver you drive you to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. This splendid 11th Century medieval capital was once a thriving commercial and religious centre and has many archaeological treasures that still give a pretty good idea of how the city looked in its heyday. later in the afternoon, you will then visit Pidurangala Rock and get a bird’s-eye view of Sigiriya Lion's rock, as well as a 360-degree view of the surrounding valley. This is the perfect opportunity to take many memorable photographs.

After breakfast, you will finally get to climb the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress. The climb to the summit takes approximately 60-90 minutes and the terraced top has breathtakingly beautiful panoramic views of the vicinity. Later in the afternoon, you will go on a Jeep safari through the Kaudulla National Park. The park is home to 200+ elephants, monkeys, crocodiles and even a handful of leopards.

Today, you will visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, the largest cave in Sri Lanka, on your way between Sigiriya to Kandy. History records that Dambulla was inhabited from as early as the 7th to 3rd century BC and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit a Spice Garden for an introduction to indigenous Ayurveda plants & spices. You will then visit the iconic Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, which is located within the royal complex of the last kingdom of Sri Lanka. You can see a plethora of unique paintings and ancient architecture during this visit.

Today, you'll travel to the Kandy Railway Station to board the scenic train journey to Ella. This epic train journey is known as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. The train to Kandy will sweep through lush green meadows, lovely old bridges, beautiful tea plantations and picturesque misty mountains. Visit the famous Nine Arch bridge in Demodara, which was built during the British era with only stone bricks and cement and no steel. Finally, you will experience Zip Lining for a rush of adrenaline.

Today you will visit Udawalawe, one of the biggest National Parks in Sri Lanka and experience a jeep safari at the Udawalawe National Park, getting close to exotic birds and different species of beasts, including wild elephants and an occasional leopard. Lying in the deep down south of the Island, combining a strict nature reserve with a national park, Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammal and 215 bird species.

In the afternoon, you will be driven to Mirissa, where you can relax at the hotel or simply sit back at the Mirissa beach after checking in.
