17-Day Langtang to Helambu Trek

Overview

The Langtang, Gosainkunda and Helambu trek combines the spectacular valley of Langtang and the high mountain lakes of Gosainkunda.

Langtang Valley is just north of Kathmandu and next to the Tibet border covering an area of 1710 square kilometres. The park contains numerous climate zones from subtropical to alpine and gives travellers an opportunity to experience the lifestyle of various ethnicities and different traditions.

The trek will take you to the high mountain holy lake of Gosainkunda, which has a significant religious value in both Hindu and Buddhist people. This lake plays an important role in keeping the peace between the two religions.

This 17-day Nepal trip package offers outstanding views of the Himalayas from nearly every part of the trek. Langtang Gosainkunda is the nearest area to Kathmandu to experience the perfect highland wilderness which is known as the habitat of rare red pandas and various ethnic communities.

Day 1

Arrival at Kathmandu

Once you land in Kathmandu airport you will be greeted by your guide and transferred by private car to Moonlight Hotel for check in. Once you are settled into the hotel, you'll have a pre-trip meeting at the hotel in the afternoon, and afterwards, you are free to explore the city at your leisure.

Today your guide will take you on a sightseeing tour around Kathmandu. First up, you'll visit Swyambhunath Stupa also known as Monkey temple. Then you will head to Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath Stupa. In the afternoon you'll have some time to explore Thamel. You can have your dinner in a restaurant called "Bhojan Griha" if you wish, where you can enjoy Nepali dishes with a cultural show.

In the morning, you will take a public bus to Syapru Besi, which will take around 7 hours. Along the way, you'll stop in Trishuli for a quick lunch. Once you are checked into the tea house, you are free to explore the town. In the evening, you'll have a delicious dinner at your accommodation.

After breakfast, you will begin the day's trek. Today you will trek 6 hours to Lama Hotel, which includes a stop at Bamboo restaurant for lunch. You'll trek through oak and rhododendron forests, making your way to the Lama Hotel, which is one of the nicer accommodation options in this trip. When you arrive at the hotel you'll have some free time to rest and enjoy the views before dinner.

Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

You will leave the tea house after breakfast to head towards your destination for today. You will start with an ascent from Lama hotel with excellent views of the mountain landscape. As you reach the green meadows of Ghode Tabela for lunch, you will have a view of the white peaks of the Langtang range. Continue to ascend the valley passing by a Buddhist monastery, which was affected by the 2015 earthquake. After, you will approach Langtang village. The trek today will take around 6 hours.

Day 6

Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa

After breakfast, you will trek 3 to 4 hours to Kyanjin Gompa passing by water mills, prayer wheels, chorten and sacred mounds of rocks with carved inscriptions on them. You'll also pass by the largest mani wall in Nepal, made from stone with prayers written on them. Check into your tea house upon arrival, and you will hike to Kyanjin Ri after lunch. Explore the Buddhist shrine in Kyangjin Gompa and explore the surrounding areas with the amazing views of the mountains.

Day Trip to Tserko Ri

Day Trip to Tserko Ri

Today is one of the most challenging and wonderful hikes of this trek. You will wake up early in the morning to hike 4 to 5 hours to Tserko Ri after breakfast. The trail passes through yak pastures before ascending to Tserko Ri, where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Himalaya from the top. You will return to Kyangjin Gompa in the late afternoon and here you can explore the beautiful monastery with views of the Himalayas and glaciers.

Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

From Kyanjin Gompa you will trek for 7 hours to Lama Hotel. You will follow the same trail as your ascend. Most of the trekking today will be downhill as you will pass through forests and beautiful Tamang villages. Stop at Ghode Tabela for lunch and then continue to Lama Hotel. In the afternoon, you'll check into the tea house and you will be free to explore the village before dinner.

Your trek starts with an hour ascent to Rimche Village, you will then descend to the bank of Langtang Khola. You will walk along the river passing through a bamboo forest and terrace fields. Then you will continue your trek, crossing a suspension bridge and passing by a waterfall to before you reach Thulo Syabru village. You will be trekking for 5 hours today.

Today you will trek 4 to 5 hours to Sing Gompa where you can explore a beautiful Buddhist monastery and a famous cheese factory. You will pass Langtang National Park before you reach Daragang, walking through the oak forests where you may see the rare red panda. Then you will continue passing by the rhododendron forests until reaching Sing Gompa.

Today is the highlight of your trek: heading towards Gosainkunda, the place of the holy lake. You will start with an ascent to enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the Himalayas including the Annapurnas, Hiunchuli, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang Himal. You will stop at Lauri Binayak for a tea break and then ascend to Gosainkunda with views of beautiful waterfalls and lakes. Check into a tea house in the afternoon and you'll be free to explore around the lake after lunch.

Today your morning starts with a quick trip around Gosainkunda lake before returning to the tea house to have breakfast. Then, you will follow the trail to Ghopte, over rocky hills, passing four small lakes to reach the Lauribinayak Pass (4610 metres). You will enjoy the stunning views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung.

Ghopte to Melamchi Ghyang

Check out of your tea house after breakfast and head towards Melamchi Ghyang. The trek starts with a small descent, then slowly begins to ascend to Tharepati passing through rhododendron forests. You can see cattle herders residing in huts and most of the mud houses. You will cross a watercourse then the trail slowly descends through rhododendron and pine forests to approach Melamchi Ghyang with incredible views of Helambu valley, Jugal Himal and Numbur in Solukhumbu.

Today you will trek across a small stream below Tarkhgyang, then you will continue your trek to Ama Yangri, the highest elevation of this trek (3800 metres) passing through forests along the way. At the top of the hill, you can visit a Stupa and you will enjoy the spectacular view of Mt. Shishapangma and the Langtang ranges that are so close you can almost touch them.

The trail today is an easy walk, you will pass through small bushy forests on a relatively flat area of land. After crossing forests, you will pass by some of the beautiful villages, chortens, a mani wall and a monastery to reach Sermathang, where you will enjoy the outstanding views of Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal and the Langtang ranges. You might even have a view of Mount Everest in the distance on a very clear day.

This is the last day of your trek, which is a short one to Melamchi Bazar. Today you will trek for 4 hours through terrace fields, meadows and many beautiful settlements. You will have lunch at Melamchi Bazar before heading towards Kathmandu by bus. When you arrive, you will be invited for a farewell dinner organised by your local designer with a Nepali family.
